Energy Savings
Francisco José Bernal

Unfortunately scientific journalism does not cover dissemination needs in regard to scientific and technological advances and happenings. Today, more than ever, it is a compromise to make people conscious about the transcending damages of energy waste and its inadequate use, vital engine of development. This is the case of an alarming energy waste in the universe of world industry plants, and specifically in Latin America, including Mexico. All due to old preservation systems of lubrication in industrial machinery.
This is how a new science, Tribology, that studies wear by friction and its associated effects, it’s being applied at industrial plants, having demonstrated, under scientific studies grounds, that one third of produced energy is lost due to wear and friction, bringing as consequence machinery break, plant shutdowns that greatly affect the environment, industrial safety and plant efficiency. It has been demonstrated that corrective maintenance in order to solve such problems, consumes three times more economic resources than predictive maintenance, that costs both the industry and consumers, billions of dollars every year.
The different application areas of Tribology comprise sectors as energy, ecology and industrial safety, among others. It is important to point out the world class transcending labour of the STLE, that currently counts with 4, 300 recognized members around the world and with a high level technological patrimony. This organization gathers scientists, professionals and educators who by applying the science of Tribology to practical problems, carry out a “New Industrial Revolution”.
The goal of the Society of Tribologists is to encourage the active cooperation between industry and the profession of knowledge advance in science and all of its branches, support and stimulate the study of theory and practice development of lubrication techniques, accumulate and disseminate lubrication information and promote the highest lubrication standards.
In Mexico, arisen from businessman Miguel González Bonnín’s initiative, the invitation was authorized by Michel Murphy, current STLE president, to create the Iberoamerican Section of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, located in Mexico City. This event will be held next April the 26th at 18:00 hours in Revolución Avenue 1398, Colonia Guadalupe Inn.
This is an important step for the technological-business field in Mexico, in order to promote energy saving and efficiency of our industrial plants through an intelligent application of industrial lubrication systems.
The strengthening of the Mexican affairs with the US and Canada focused in an industrial development without affecting the quality of life, are giving an interesting scope to Mexico to begin its definite take off for this task.
